The Risk of a College Education

On the NAS site, I argue that we need full disclosure about the risks of investing in a college education. It troubles me to hear students who have blind faith that they will be able to repay their student loans when they graduate.

Because many students see college as an investment in themselves, I want those “investors” to realize that some investments can lose value and that past performances do not indicate future results.

If more prospective students approached college with a clearer picture of the dollars and cents involved, they may realize that there are people who are better off betting the farm on red or black than they are sending it to the ivory tower.
