One of the few bastions of liberal education is the U.S. is St. John’s, a two-campus school (Annapolis and Santa Fe) where students are tutored in great books and fine arts.
Sadly, as Roger Kimball reports in this piece, it is in danger from board members who want to transform it into a standard model American college. The new leader would be one Mark Roosevelt, a man not noted for any scholarly accomplishments, but who is big on social justice.
Boards are supposed to keep bad things from happening, but here it seems that the board is going to be responsible for something bad happening. If St. John’s becomes just another standard model American college, I think it’s going to fail.
