Phi Beta Cons

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

The National GEM Consortium awards fellowships to graduate students in science and engineering.  For years, only “underrepresented minorities”—i.e., only blacks, Latino, and Native Americans, and no white, Asian, or Arab Americans—were allowed to apply.  Recently, though, the Consortium has followed the consensus view in higher education that such racial exclusivity is not only divisive and unfair but illegal, and now accepts applications from all racial and ethnic groups.  To be sure, the Consortium doesn’t advertise this fact and, indeed, its website seems designed to hide this new policy; plus, one has no doubt, URMs are still preferred.  Still, it’s a step in the right direction, and here’s hoping that the Consortium gets plenty of applications from non-URMs.
