Sociology professor Carl Bankston of Tulane writes in this Minding the Campus essay about the protests at UCLA against Rick Sander for having criticized the school’s admission policy. Whether he’s correct in his analysis or not isn’t the point, of course. By arguing that preferential admissions have harmful unintended consequences, he has offended a lot of people on his campus.
All of this dovetails with the message of Greg Lukianoff’s new book Unlearning Liberty. Large numbers of young Americans have been conditioned to respond to ideas they don’t like by trumpeting their feelings rather than by logical argument against those ideas.
