Here is a BBC story on the increasing percentage of Brits with college degrees who end up working in jobs that don’t call for any college education. Just as the U.S. has pushed college as a great policy for improving the country, so has the U.K.
The story mentions that the general secretary of the TUC (the Trades Union Council, I believe) is unhappy with the situation, but instead of just admitting that too many young people are wasting resources on higher education, he wants the government to step in and “boost” industries where advanced study is supposedly necessary. That’s the typical interventionist mindset — when one government policy produces bad results, come up with another policy to intervene somewhere else in an effort at fixing the first problem.
