Slippery Rock Bottom

Candace’s post on Slippery Rock U. saddens me, if only for purely sentimental reasons of alma mater. There was a longstanding practice at Michigan Stadium, the “Big House” where the University of Michigan plays football, for the public-address announcer to call out the score of the Slippery Rock game — the crowd would cheer enthusiastically when “The Rock” was winning or had won. It was a nifty local tradition which, if I’m not mistaken, was halted a few years ago for absolutely no good reason. At any rate, fans were supposed to boo Ohio State and cheer for The Rock. I still can’t bring myself to boo the place; I prefer it to remain the quaint teacher’s college of my imagination.
