Is Tenure the Root of All Evil?

No, but it is responsible for much that is wrong with our higher-education system, argues Naomi Schaefer Riley in her recent book The Faculty Lounges. In today’s Pope Center piece, Duke Cheston reviews the book. He agrees with the author’s conclusion that tenure imposes substantial costs on colleges and universities, but does little to protect academic freedom, its principal justification.
