If you only have time to read one thing today, I suggest that it should be this article by Peter Wood of NAS.
In it, Peter puts the notion of “sustainability” under the microscope. He concludes that schools that allow the zealots for sustainability dogma to run wild may have a hard time with a real and undogmatic kind of sustainability, namely their own financial viability, if students start looking around for institutions offering plain-vanilla education.
In the Soviet military during World War II and after, every unit had its “political officer” whose job it was to root out and punish any dreaded deviation from the party line. It seems to me that the “sustainability” crusade has its own commissars and party line. Dissenting students won’t get a firing squad, but they may be singled out for criticism, as at the University of Delaware.
