Is There Any Upside to Preferential Admission Policies?

In a recent Chronicle of Higher Education article, Rice University math professor Richard Tapia made a case in favor of preferential admission policies for “underrepresented minority” students, arguing that without such favoritism, the country will continue to experience (and supposedly suffer from) a lack of “equitable representation” on the faculties of top research universities.

In a piece released today by the Pope Center, I take a critical look at Professor Tapia’s arguments. I don’t find them persuasive, to say the least.
