On American Thinker, former University of California regent Velma Montoya has an article entitled “Gutting Accountability at the University of California.”
“Proposed changes in the governance of the UC System,” she writes, “would empower its president, former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, with greatly enhanced autonomy by hamstringing the principal check on her power, the Regents.”
One of the changes would deprive individual regents of the authority to place items on the meeting agenda. Having to garner a majority will keep some matters that are of interest to only one or two dissidents from being discussed. Another, so in keeping with the power-crazed left’s modus operandi, would empower a committee to dismiss any member of the board “for noncompliance with University laws, regulations, and policies.”
The very idea of checks and balances is upsetting to progressives who love concentrated power — when they have it, of course.
