In response to John Tierney’s fabulous op-ed on Title IX last week, the NYT printed four letters to the editor blasting Tierney’s article and supporting quotas. They didn’t print the following letter submitted by the coaches:

Parents, coaches and alumni across the country are striving mightily to add men’s collegiate athletics teams – precisely because, as John Tierney and Bill Pennington point out, there is keen interest in participation. But schools are browbeaten by gender quota zealots who insist that proportionality is the only way to comply with Title IX. At long last, there’s a viable alternative. The US Department of Education now offers clear guidance for school administrators who find the gender quota unreasonable, and want to actually test the interest of their students. Now small schools like Seton Hill and Shenandoah can use athletics as a tool to draw more male students to their campuses without fearing lawsuits.
