Last week, I commented on the new Goldwater Institute study on the phenomenon of administrative bloat in higher education. Professor Todd Zywicki of George Mason Law School has also taken a look at that study and offers his thoughts in this Volokh Conspiracy post.
He compares college and university administration with top-heavy corporations such as General Motors, and writes that coffers bulging with endowment cash, combined with lax budget constraints, encouraged the frittering away of resources on unproductive bureaucrats and internal empire building.
Zywicki raises a good question: Now that the days of money gushers are past, will colleges and universities trim down their overgrown administrative staffs?
