‘Tricorder For Evil’

The Homeland Security Department is researching camera systems, chemical sensors and other technologies to detect the growing threat of improvised explosive devices (IED). These technologies could be used in airports, subways, sports stadiums, and on city streets to alert security officers that someone is carrying an IED.
“What I’d really like to have is a Tricorder for evil,” comments Homeland Security’s Starnes Walker, alluding to the futuristic scanners used on Star Trek.  His division is working with national labs, universities and private companies to develop all manner of new computer software for detecting bombs.
