UC Institutes Policy Protecting Students’ Academic Freedom

The University of Colorado, until recently the academic home of infamous professor Ward Churchill, last month adopted the American Council on Education’s statement on Academic Rights and Responsibilities. This document was adopted as direct response to the Academic Bill of Rights, which it echoes in specifically protecting the rights of students not to be indoctrinated by their professors and granting them access to grievance procedures to protest classroom mistreatment. Toward the end of my trusteeship of the State University of New York, I repeatedly, although to no avail, urged the board to adopt precisely this ACE statement. To do so would have been to blaze a liberating trail throughout all American higher education. It is now of great importance that the UC Board, which deserves high praise for its leadership, follows up by verifying compliance with its directive.
