Unfortunately, I stayed in Cambridge today and will miss what is sure to be quite the performance at the Oxford Union, the English debating society most known for its infamous resolution “That this House will in no circumstances fight for its King and Country,” which was affirmed on a two-thirds margin in 1933.
The “world’s premier debating society,” as it likes to fancy itself, has lately fallen into the tar pit of postmodernism, serving up frivolities rather than debates on serious issues, which at least spares the rest of us the House’s considered opinion. And so today Anna Wintour, the woman who brought Teen Vogue into being, will be giving a talk, followed by a man named David Icke.
From the Oxford Union’s Termcard:
26th Feb 2008 8:30pm
Description: Once a professional footballer, David Icke announced to the world in 1991 that he was a channel for the ‘Christ Spirit’ and left his job as a member of the Green Party to focus on his new function as a full time investigator into ‘what and who is really controlling the world’. He concluded that the world is, in fact, controlled by a race of semi-reptilian humanoids, known as the Babylonian Brotherhood. Both the Queen and George W Bush are amongst its members. This is a talk that is definitely not to be missed!
