I read with glee Peter Wood’s description of the Univ. of Kansas’s forthcoming ‘Tunnel of Oppression.’ Why the amusement, besides the obvious?
Because it’s already been done, in a 2002 episode of South Park. In ‘The Death Camp of Tolerance’ (Episode 614) the boys are sent to the Museum of Tolerance to rid them of their perceived insensitivities. The first attraction they visit is the ‘Tunnel of Prejudice,’ where a conveyor belt ferries them along while vile epithets flash across the top of the enclosure and as recordings of the insults are piped through an audio system.
The entire episode is a savaging of diversity nonsense. The kids actually end up in a concentration camp for the intolerant, illustrating graphically that there’s none quite so intolerant as those who preach endless tolerance.
Like most South Park efforts, the episode is well beyond the bounds of good taste. Also like most efforts, the point is brilliantly made.
Nice job, Kansas. Without any sense of irony you’ve become a parody of a parody.
Keep up the good work,
