Where Did the Idea that Economics is “The Dismal Science” Come From?

Professor David Levy of George Mason University explains the origin in this Freeman article. It has nothing to do with the supposed gloom that comes from realizing that scarcity makes trade-offs inevitable. Instead, the term was coined by the enemies of laissez-faire who thought that slavery was just fine.
