Why Do Students Cheat?

In a Minding the Campus essay, Rita Kramer (whose excellent 1991 book Ed School Follies is still a must-read) discusses the recent cheating scandal at Harvard and finds its roots in the progressive educational mania for “cooperative learning.” That entails little learning and a lot of socialization; in such classrooms, teachers don’t really teach, but “facilitate” students’ cooperative efforts.
