Women, Science, and Discrimination

The good news is that a National Academies of Science paper has conceded that, as an empirical matter, discrimination isn’t really much of a problem for women in math and science fields. They identify career preferences, work/family balance, differences in cognitive abilities (Larry Summers is smiling somewhere), and a lack of female role models as causes of the male-female gap.

The bad news: They see their findings not as a reason for the government to butt out, but as a reason for the government to intervene to provide role models and a different work/family balance for women.
