Another fire broke out on a Mariner Energy platform 75 miles south of Morgan City around 8:55 a.m. this morning, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
The small fire was already extinguished by the time a Coast Guard crewe arrived, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Casey Renel. According to the Coast Guard no one on the platform was in need of a rescue.
The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement is investigating the incident. A spokeswoman for the agency, Eileen Angelico, said in a statement that investigators with the agency are en route to the scene.
She said the platform was located in located in 223 feet of water, and that no pollution has been reported. The wells connected to the platform are permanently plugged, she said.
Patrick Cassidy, a spokesman for Mariner Energy, said the platform had not been in operation since 2006. It would normally be unmanned, but he said two workers were on the platform doing a cutting operation to decommission it.
The fire was put out with a water hose and a fire extinguisher, he said.
Before the BP disaster, I wonder how many of these types of incidents were never reported.
