Whether Crist would address conventioneers and appear on national television just before McCain was up in the air just hours before his scheduled speech, somewhere around 9 p.m.
Crist already had a taped video in the can introducing McCain, whom the governor supported before Florida’s presidential primary in January.
But both options appear to be off the table, Crist’s political adviser George LeMieux said this evening.
Crist has consistently said all week that he would skip attending the convention because he is “focused on” the triple threat of storms potentially headed Florida’s way — Hanna, Ike and Josephine.
But why that precludes him the national limelight by giving his speech by satellite or by videotape remains a mystery.
“It’s a great political sacrifice not to be here. But he’s doing his job,” LeMieux said.
