Hawaii’s “Moon Shot”

The New York Times editors are giddy over the idea that Hawaii is taking a shot at the moon in trying to wean itself off of fossil fuels in ten years. I assume the fossil-fuel ban will not apply to the fossil-fueled airplanes or the fossil-fueled ships that carry the tourism life-blood to the Hawaiian economy each year.

Hawaii is as energy-hungry as any state, but it has no oil, natural gas, hydroelectric dams or nuclear plants. It needs imported crude to keep the lights on, but it also has an abundance of clean-energy sources: sunshine, wind, powerful tides and waves and cold ocean depths.

Oddly, geothermal — which Hawaii is actually pretty well positioned to take advantage of – is missing from the list.
