As indicated in “My Second Psychedelic Revival,” 2008-to-the present has seen a significant burst of indie-rock creativity, and much of it has a mid-to-late 60s feel to it. There is an entire folk-oriented scene, a number of bands whose fondness for 80s post-punk or noise-pop that leads them back to 60s-ish sounds, and what’s been of most interest to me, a number of bands exploring folk-rock, garage, and psychedelic sounds.
A few years ago I made an initial stab at writing about some of the contemporary noise-pop and psychedelic bands in “Surfin’ the You-Tube with the Noise-Pop Beach Goths.” Today I have a better overall sense of the scene and have become more of an outright fan, although it may be that we’re nearing the tail-end of the trend. Several of the more significant artists, such as Cate Le Bon, Thee Oh Sees, Woods, and Kevin Morby are moving in directions that are less and less classifiable as psychedelic or garage.
