Yup, game seven turned out to be quite the afterthought, but the Redbirds and their legions of fans sure don’t mind. The Cardinals, who seemingly were 57 1/2 games back of the wildcard spot with only one week to play, tonight captured their 11th World Series crown, the most by a National League club, thanks to a 6-2 victory over the listless Rangers.
On two different occasions in game six the Rangers had been one strike away from the championship, but when minutes ago left fielder Allen Craig drifted back and caught David Murphy’s long fly ball, Texas became the first team to lose back-to-back World Series since the 1991-92 Braves.
Hometown hero David Freese was named series Most Valuable Player.
