Baseball Reveille 1/23/12

Good morning!

Here are several go-to links that will make the offseason a bit more bearable:

  • Jack Moore of Fangraphs appears pleased to see Carlos Pena head back to the Rays.

  • ESPN The Magazine’s Steve Wulf has the story about the team from Uganda, unable to attend last August’s Little League World Series due to U.S. visa issues, finally got to play its slated opponent from British Columbia, albeit some 35 miles from Kampala.

  • In a column about the bidding process over the Dodgers, Ramona Shelburne of ESPN Los Angeles quotes Rob Reiner, an award presenter at a recent Beverly Hills baseball charity event: “‘Show of hands,’ Reiner said, clearly going a bit off script. ‘Who in this room isn’t trying to buy the Dodgers?’”

  • Inside the Book’s Tom Tango: “[Tim] Lincecum will lose his arbitration hearing.”

  • Now that Jesus Montero is en route to the Pacific Northwest, who should the Yankees sign to be the designated hitter? Ken Davidoff of Newsday suggests Raul Ibañez.

  • The Hardball Times’ Myron Logan notices that the Padres’ offseason has been quite eventful.

  • The Rockies dealt away outfielder Seth Smith to the A’s, then acquired middle infielder Marco Scutaro from the Red Sox. As for the latter deal, “Matt Clement of Alexandria” of Sox Therapy is not a happy camper.

The Rox signed Jamie Moyer. What was up in the bigs when he made his MLB debut?

That’s it, folks. Hang in there: there is barely a month before pitchers and catchers report!
