Dodgers Celebrate in the Pool; Mrs. Smails Livid

By defeating the Diamondbacks in Phoenix yesterday, 7–6, the Dodgers clinched the NL West crown. After Chase Field had just about emptied out, the Dodger players elected to do some additional celebrating in the ballpark’s swimming pool, which is located beyond the right-center-field fence.

At least one D-backs player took the spectacle in stride:

While another did his best Mrs. Smails impersonation:

“I just think they have enough guys on that team that it’s surprising they would allow that to happen,” Diamondbacks infielder Willie Bloomquist said. “I’ll give credit where credit’s due. They won the division, so congratulations to them. I would expect someone to act with a little more class. I highly doubt the New York Yankees would do something like that.”

(To be fair, the judge’s wife did not lecture those crazy caddies on the need to behave like Billy Martin Joe DiMaggio.)

Even the Arizona Republic editorial board somehow found the matter worthy of comment:

Congratulations are in order. Even to a bunch as classless as the Los Angeles Dodgers, the first players not wearing Diamondbacks uniforms to celebrate a championship by diving into the Chase Field pool.

Gee, I had no idea that 15-year-old swimming hole is a desert treasure akin to the monuments situated beyond the Yankee Stadium fence.
