Prince of the Motor City

Prince Fielder, about to enter his age-28 season, has agreed to play the next nine seasons in Detroit. According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, the contract is worth $214 million.

Surprised? Get in line.

Wasn’t slugger Miguel Cabrera the Tigers’ full-time first baseman? If Miggy gets moved to the designated hitter spot, what happens when current DH Victor Martinez returns in 2014?

As Benjamin Kabak of River Avenue Blues mused, “A handful of teams could have used Prince Fielder on a long-term deal. The Tigers were not one of them. Strange.”

In spite of living within a chubby-wubby frame, Fielder has missed exactly one game in the last three years. He clocked 38 home runs and posted a stellar .408 wOBA in 2011.
