Tim Wakefield Hangs Up His Knuckles

Via MLB Trade Rumors, Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield is expected to announce his retirement later today. The 45-year-old knuckleballer spent the past 17 seasons in Boston after commencing his career in Pittsburgh.

Wakefield racked up 200 victories and a 38.6 fWAR in the bigs. As Aaron Gleeman of Hardball Talk observed:

In addition to ranking third among all Red Sox pitchers in wins, Wakefield also ranks first in starts and innings and second in games pitched and strikeouts. Not bad for a guy whose average fastball during the past decade clocked in at 74.1 miles per hour.
