Alex Tabarrok on the Gurgaon Miracle

I greatly enjoyed Alex Tabarrok’s post on Gurgaon, a fascinating non-city that borders on India’s bustling capital, which draws on Jim Yardley’s fascinating article on the same.

As always, I’m baffled by the fact that people are complaining about how far and how fast this little urban archipelago has come. Yes, progress is uneven. But Gurgaon was a barren wasteland just a few years ago! The wealth that’s being created there is benefiting everyone, and it will soon buy a more inclusive infrastructure! As Matt Yglesias suggests, and I use the term “suggests” broadly, Gurgaon’s success should drive policymakers in Mumbai and other established Indian cities to abandon pathologically counterproductive regulations.
