The Agenda

The GOP’s Christian Democratic Caucus

Rod Dreher has a short post on Rep. Jeff Fortenberry (R-NE), a Catholic conservative who intends to run for the Republican Senate nomination in Nebraska come 2014. Fortenberry faces opposition from anti-tax conservatives on the grounds that he refuse to renew his commitment to the Americans for Tax Reform Taxpayer Protection Pledge, yet as Dreher observes, he seems to be working towards an interesting populist-conservative synthesis. Though I don’t share all of Fortenberry’s instincts, he would be wise to champion Robert Stein’s expanded child credit as a way to give policy heft to his aspiration towards a more Main Street, middle-class conservatism.
