In The New York Review of Books, Anne Applebaum, author of the brilliant Iron Curtain, reviews Sheryl Sandberg’s Lean In, contrasting it against Hanna Rosin’s very different The End of Men. She concludes on a provocative note: could it be that having more women in senior leadership roles, the goal Sandberg identifies as being of transcendent importance, is not as important as some of the broader social and political goals that Sandberg largely ignores, like redressing the closely related problems caused by family breakdown and deterioration of the labor market position of less-skilled men. If greater representativeness doesn’t have a concrete impact on the lives of working women, perhaps it shouldn’t be our foremost concern. I’m really not doing the essay justice — you ought to read it.
