Nancy Birdsall and Christian Meyer on Defining the Global Middle Class

One of the more striking aspects of Nancy Birdsall and Christian Meyer’s discussion of how to define the global middle class is a chart at the bottom of the post illustrating the middle income share of the population of various countries, defined in this case as the share of population with a per capita daily income of $10 to $50. Note the contrast between urban China and urban India.
