One thing I’ve found very striking about the reaction to the death of Trayvon Martin: Gov. Rick Scott (R-FL) has told the press that he is open to revising the Stand Your Ground statute that has been at the heart of the controversy; Dennis Baxley, the state legislator who co-authored the legislation, has been quick to express sympathy for Martin’s family, and he has been very clear about the fact that Stand Your Ground is not meant to legitimate pursuit and violent confrontation; and Walter Olson and Jeannie Suk have offered their own nuanced takes. I get the tentative sense that this conversation hasn’t gotten crazily polarized.
