The Campaign Spot

Ben, Are You Feeling Okay?

In a year of campaign ads that brought us Demonsheep, crack-addicted stimulus monkeys, and Dale Peterson, this ad for Ben Quayle, son of the former vice president and a candidate for U.S. House of Representatives in Arizona . . . somehow manages to stick out as one of the odder ones.

For starters, my first instinct is that they should stop taping and ask Quayle if he’s feeling all right. This is the slowest delivery I’ve seen since I spent a few hours waiting for my bags at the Denver airport luggage carousel.

I wince at the lament, “Drug cartels in Mexico, tax cartels in Washington.” I hate higher taxes, but the expiration of the Bush tax cuts does not belong on the same level of moral outrage as, say, the murder of Arizona rancher Robert Krentz.

Then there’s the closing slogan: “Somebody has to go to Washington and knock the hell out of the place.”

Perhaps Marco Rubio, or Sarah Palin, or even a Jon Runyan (or Peterson!) could deliver that line. But the relatively unknown son of a vice president? Come on.
