The Campaign Spot

Comstock Rising

Barbara Comstock is running for delegate in Virginia, to represent the McLean/Great Falls area against a Democrat who was elected last year by a thin margin in a seat held by a Republican for 30 years. The local press foresees a “close fight to the finish.”

I note that on issues of transportation, her rival, Del. Margaret G. Vanderhye, is using the same groundbreaking and innovative method of sorting out a hard decision as her party’s gubernatorial candidate, calling for an “independent task force” to study the issue. Way to take a stand, ma’am. Your chapter in the new edition of Profiles in Courage looks assured now.

A politically connected resident of the district describes Comstock’s effort as a “classic successful insurgent campaign,” noting the thousands of doors she’s knocked on since early in the year.

(If my memory serves correctly, Barbara Comstock was among the first to write to the editors of NRO with warm enthusiasm for the then-new Kerry Spot, so my preferences in this neighboring state-delegate district are clear.)

UPDATE: Comstock must be close enough to get her opponentt to start running negative mail against her; strangely, the negative attack is for working with Heather Podesta on asbestos-lawsuit reform legislation supported by Sen. Patrick Leahy (D., Vt.).

Of course, with that news, I’m sure some NRO readers are asking, “What was she doing working with Heather Podesta on asbestos-lawsuit reform legislation supported by Patrick Leahy?”
