Creigh Deeds, on Both Sides of the Abortion Issue Within Five Days

Creigh Deeds, discussing abortion with the Virginian-Pilot on October 12:

I am pro-choice. I think these difficult decisions are deeply personal. A woman should make reproductive decisions with her family, her doctor and her spiritual adviser. I do not believe government should be involved in these decisions.

Creigh Deeds, discussing abortion with Newsweek in an article published October 17:

Deeds is pro-choice, but with qualifiers. “I voted for parental notification,” he says. “I voted to ban late-term abortions where the life and health of the mother are protected.”

So how does one square support for a ban on late-term abortions, even with life and health exceptions, with a belief that government should not be involved in these decisions?
