Curtains for Steele This Early?

I haven’t heard this from my RNC sources, but over at 538.com, they’re claiming to hear from former RNC staffers that Michael Steele will be out as chairman if Republican Jim Tedisco loses the special election for Kirsten Gillibrand’s House seat on March 31.

Far be it from me to question 538.com’s sources, and I concur that a surprise Democratic win in that right-leaning district would amplify the grumbling about Steele. And Byron mentioned during my guest-hosting stint last week that in the aftermath of the Rush Limbaugh brouhaha, some RNC members were already looking up the rules for removing a chairman.

But would former RNC staffers know with “absolute” certainty that Steele would resign, or be kicked out of a post, if the GOP fails to pick up a House seat in a special election? That would be the straw that breaks the camel’s back?
