The Campaign Spot

The Debate Begins

Jim Lehrer is, I suspect, the first debate moderator to use hot pink post-it notes.
First up is Obama on the recovery plan.
They really ought to give each candidate time to thank everyone first, so that it doesn’t cut into their answer time.
I’m not the type to usually notice this, but the makeup on Obama seems surprisingly heavy. There’s a real shine coming off of his forehead and cheekbones.
McCain begins by thanking and mentions Kennedy.
(He didn’t mention the seizure, which seems a little odd.)
McCain says he’s “feeling a little better tonight.” “This isn’t the beginning of the end of this crisis. This is the end of the beginning. We have a lot of work to do.”

Obama says he warned of us of the subprime mortgage crisis two years ago.
McCain tells the tale of the two letters Eisenhower wrote before the invasion of Normandy – one a letter of congratulations, the other his resignation taking responsibility for failure. “We’ve lost that accountability. I called for the resignation of the chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission.” Independents, according to CNN’s scrolling chart, really like that part.
