South Carolina’s gaining a House seat in redistricting, and one veteran GOP state lawmaker is throwing his hat in the ring:
Conservative 5th-term South Carolina State Representative Thad Viers (R-68) today announced that he will run for Congress in South Carolina’s new 7th Congressional District.
Viers, an unapologetic fiscal conservative from Myrtle Beach, was the only member of the Horry County Delegation, and 1 of only 7 total in the State House of Representatives, to vote AGAINST South Carolina taking President Obama’s stimulus money.
“The Pee Dee deserves a principled conservative leader who will go to Washington focused on the next generation and not the next election,” said Viers. “I would have proudly stood with SouthCarolina’s conservative congressional delegation in opposing an increase in the national debt ceiling. We have to stop Washington’s reckless spending spree if we’re ever going to get our economy back on track.”
“I firmly believe we do not have a revenue problem in Washington, we have a spending problem, and it’s time to start making real changes,” continued Viers. “For far too long the federal government has tried to replace God in the church and parents in the home. Now, government wants to spend all of your money and demands a ‘thank you’ for doing so. I’ll work with South Carolina’s conservative congressional delegation to make sure that doesn’t happen.”
South Carolina’s redistricting plan still has to be approved by the Department of Justice; if approved, the new 7th district will include the northeastern corner of the state, including Dillon, Marion, Horry, Georgetown, Marlboro, and part of Florence counties.
