I’m sure most of the House Democrats who have signed on to the DCCC’s “I’m Not Retiring” list will actually keep their word and not retire. But I’d note that staffers for Tennessee Democrat Bart Gordon were telling reporters he was running for reelection, about a week before he announced his retirement. Sometimes members have every intention of running for reelection, until they see that one poll or have that one difficult reception in their home district, and then the choice looks a bit different . . .
Also, the problem with a national committee publicizing their “I’m not retiring” list is that you start to notice the names NOT on it, like Rick Boucher of Virginia, John Spratt of South Carolina, Leonard Boswell of Iowa, Baron Hill of Indiana, Vic Snyder of Arkansas, Allen Boyd of Florida, Mike Ross of Arkansas, Nick Rahall of West Virginia . . .
