New Jersey governor Jon Corzine, in his inaugural address four years ago: “Hold me accountable.”

Of course, these days, his campaign manager is forced to argue why he shouldn’t be held accountable for breaking promises: “In light of the recession, Corzine shouldn’t be blamed for falling short on some campaign pledges, Darcy said.”
