Huckabee: The Constitution is a “living breathing document“…
… that needs to be amended to be “in God’s standards.”
Huckabee’s “in God’s standards,” comment, by the way, was in favor of a Human Life Amendment and an amendment defining marriage as being between a man and a woman.
Neither one of those proposals is terribly controversial in conservative circles, but the justification of altering the Constitution to make it in accordance to “God’s standards” is striking coming from a major presidential candidate.
Besides Stuttaford’s point, there’s more to add on this double-take-inducing justification. I mentioned this point briefly, and probably not well, on Hugh Hewitt’s show earlier this week. America is a Judeo-Christian nation, but it’s also a secular one. To get those amendment’s passed, Huckabee (and any other backers) need to persuade a sizable majority that they’re good on their own merits for America; asserting the divine thumbs up is nice but is not persuasive to all, or probably even enough Americans.
If I want to build a majority for a constitutional amendment, I stay away from the “because God says so” arguments.
