“I don’t think there is a great deal of support for sending more troops to Afghanistan in the country or in Congress,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said today.
The Democrats are an inherently pacifist party, not interested in using military force beyond America’s borders.
Of course, two years ago, when they could use Afghanistan as a rhetorical tool to bash the Iraq War, Democrats thought sending more troops to Afghanistan was a swell idea. Pelosi included: “The war on terror is in Afghanistan. The fact that we weakened our commitment to Afghanistan in order to concentrate in Iraq has taken a toll. The vacuum that was created enabled the Taliban to make a comeback. What was interesting to me in Afghanistan was that the NATO commander there told us that this could be lost. Now I did not realize that the situation was that dire in Afghanistan. And we need more troops, but we also need more NATO troops.”
Having given up in Iraq, Pelosi wants to give up in Afghanistan. Barack Obama could well turn into the Tony Blair of the United States, trying to hold fast to a hawkish position while leading a dovish party.
