I hadn’t really been paying attention to the brouhaha between Joe Klein and the folks at Commentary, but it seems to boil down to this blog post from Klein, and this statement:
The fact that a great many Jewish neoconservatives–people like Joe Lieberman and the crowd over at Commentary–plumped for this war, and now for an even more foolish assault on Iran, raised the question of divided loyalties: using U.S. military power, U.S. lives and money, to make the world safe for Israel.
It “raised the question of divided loyalties”? Oh, stop hedging. If Klein thinks that Senator Joe Lieberman and the contributors at Commentary are not entirely loyal to the United States, come out and say so. If he doesn’t, don’t waste everyone’s time by raising a question that Klein doesn’t believe deserves attention. If Klein doesn’t believe it, he ought to debunk it.
If Klein believes it, he ought to produce some evidence beyond policy disagreements. If Lieberman really does put Israel’s interest before American interests, as Klein appears to suggest, one has to worry about sensitive or classified information he has access to as chair of the Homeland Security Committee and as member of the Armed Services Committee.
I note that in a subsequent post, Klein writes, Iran is “a country that poses some threat to Israel but none–for the moment–to the United States.” On this topic, Klein really ought to listen to… Barack Obama, who declared Iran to be “one of the greatest threats to the United States, to Israel, and world peace” while speaking to AIPAC in Chicago in 2007.
