Perhaps we’ve entered the era of the Candidate-Optional Campaign.
Robert Shuman, a California-based businessman and consultant, has started a group called “Americans for Rick Perry” that he hopes will encourage Mr. Perry to throw his hat in the ring.
Mr. Shuman said the organization was spawned after a meeting with Mr. Perry about six weeks ago. “This guy should be president,” Mr. Shuman said afterwards.
ARP — not to be confused with TARP — is going to take a shot at the Ames Straw Poll next month:
The new group hopes to find Iowans who support Mr. Perry and to get them to the Aug. 13 straw poll in Ames, which not only measures candidates’ popularity but also serves as a fund-raiser for the Iowa Republican Party. Mr. Shuman says he doesn’t have precise plans yet, but generally, he says: “Let’s see if we can go up there and make some noise.”
Over at Americans for Rick Perry, they’re announcing the hiring of ex-Gingrich staffers:
Americans for Rick Perry (AFPR) announced today that they have retained Craig Schoenfeld as executive director of their Iowa organization, the same position he recently held for the Presidential campaign of former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich.
