The Campaign Spot

McCain Heckled; What’s The Point?

John McCain was heckled by antiwar protesters today, while speaking at the University of Denver. Apparently this stood out because it was four times in ten minutes.

Didn’t these antiwar protesters reach the point of counter-productivity a long time ago? John McCain is in Denver, speaking about nuclear nonproliferation. Whether you like McCain or hate him, that’s a serious issue, and we ought to hear about what he would do about it. Similarly, we all know where McCain stands on the Iraq War. He’s not going to change his mind because someone shouts at him.
At this point, noisy protesters disrupting a McCain speech are basically advertising, “I am incapable of letting those I disagree with express their views in public; I am uncomfortable with free expression and at heart a fascist, as I do not believe opposing viewpoints should be heard.”
In fact, in the speech, McCain took several positions the usual war opponent would like — opposition to development of the “bunker buster” nuclear weapon, further cuts in the nuclear arsenal, etc. But that doesn’t matter to the inane war protestors; no, to them it’s much more important that the world hear, “Stop this war” shouted for the millionth time.”
