When about half of Americans think that the press is actively trying to help Obama win the presidential election, it’s a bad time for the New York Times to refuse to run an op-ed by John McCain.
I guess when your op-ed page editor is a former speechwriter for President Clinton, we shouldn’t be surprised…

UPDATE: McCain spokesman Tucker Bounds e-mails me: “John McCain believes that victory in Iraq must be based on conditions on the ground, not arbitrary timetables. Unlike Barack Obama, that position will not change based on politics or the demands of the New York Times.”
A reader notes this line, and wonders if it cut a little too close to the bone for the tastes of the New York Times:
The danger is that extremists supported by Al Qaeda and Iran could stage a comeback, as they have in the past when we’ve had too few troops in Iraq. Senator Obama seems to have learned nothing from recent history. I find it ironic that he is emulating the worst mistake of the Bush administration by waving the “Mission Accomplished” banner prematurely.
