The Campaign Spot

No Follow-Ups, Please, I’m a Congressman

In Oregon, Rep. David Wu continues to feel the love:

Congressman David Wu fielded mostly hostile questions from constituents Monday night as he became the latest politician to hold a town hall on the topic of health care.

Across the country, angry crowds have put many lawmakers on the defensive as they try to discuss health care reform.

Wu and his staff maintained crowd control during last night’s event in McMinnville. People were allowed to ask questions only if their number was drawn from a hat, and Wu refused to recognize any follow-ups . . .

Only about 130 people could squeeze into the meeting place; hundreds more demonstrated outside.

Last week Wu was asked whether he could promise he would vote against any bill he he hadn’t read, and he replied, “I have to follow my conscience.”
