The Campaign Spot

Organizing for America Suddenly Very Focused on Fairfax County

Rep. Gerry Connolly (D., Va.), who represents the suburbs of D.C., is on my list of 99.

This Saturday, Organizing for America – the old Obama campaign e-mail list, now under the DNC – is hosting an event to register voters in Annandale, Virginia. This district probably has more interaction with Washington, D.C., than almost any, except for one or two others in Virginia and Maryland. It is home to an enormous number of lobbyists and is one of the wealthiest districts in the nation, if not the wealthiest.

The Commonwealth of Virginia has non-partisan voting registration, so we don’t know how many “registered Democrats” live there, but we know that this district had the second-highest turnout of all 11 Virginia districts on Primary Day 2009 (37,509 votes, or 7.7 percent of active voters).

In other words, there are probably fewer unregistered voters in this district than anywhere else in the country. Organizing for America is either extremely conscientious about making sure adults are registered to vote, or extremely nervous.
