Poll Watch: Among Florida’s White Born-Again Evangelicals, Rudy’s Beating Fred Nearly Two-to-One?

Florida is the one state that is on the “must-win” lists of both Rudy Giuliani and Fred Thompson. The pollsters at Quinnipiac this morning have results from that state, broken down by men, women, and white, born-again evangelicals.
Right now, Giuliani’s ahead, although Thompson’s numbers are nothing to sneeze at. Giuliani garnered 28 percent total, 31 percent of men, 26 percent of women, and 27 percent of white, born-again evangelicals.
Thompson garnered 17 percent total, 20 percent of men, 14 percent of women and 17 percent of white, born-again evangelicals.
McCain garnered 10 percent total, 12 percent of men, 8 percent of women, and 12 percent of white, born-again evangelicals.
Romney garnered 11 percent total, 11 percent of men, 12 percent of women, and 12 percent of white, born-again evangelicals.
I was surprised at how poorly Huckabee scored: 2 percent total, 2 percent of men, 1 percent of women, 2 percent of white, born-again evangelicals. Guess that Iowa straw poll momentum hasn’t spread to Florida yet.
And did anybody think Gingrich would perform twice as well among women than men? Gingrich: 6 percent total, 4  percent of men, 8 percent of women, 5 percent of white, born-again evangelicals.
Undecided scored 18 percent total, 12 percent of men, 23 percent of women, and 17 percent of white, born-again evangelicals.
By the way, Quinnipiac also notes, 67 percent of all Florida voters say it would not affect their vote if a candidate has been divorced more than once.  But 29 percent, including 31 percent of Republican voters, say they would be less likely to vote for such a candidate.
“At one time, divorce was considered a major roadblock to the presidency, but Ronald Reagan took care of that,” said Peter A. Brown assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “These numbers raise the question of whether enough voters see multiple divorces as a major flaw in a potential president.”
